The best way to become a better writer is to write. We should not only try to write more, but write in those areas we are interested in. Non-Fiction, Fiction, and the various genres in these categories. That is why I am pleased to announced that starting this week every Friday will be “Friday’s with Lucius.”
I really like Lucius’ character. You may wonder why I would chose a humorous character when I state my genre is thrillers? Two reasons. First, thrillers tend to be very dramatic. It can be emotionally draining to write about characters dealing with murder, loss, intrigue. We all need to take time out to laugh, and Lucius is my guy for that. He also inspires me to keep comic relief in my stories at the appropriate places. We all like to get away to another world. Some of us enjoy living through characters who overcome hardship or other challenges. No matter what you like, everyone wants to have a good time in the stories they submerge themselves into. Nobody wants to hang out with characters that mope around throughout the story.
So how did I come up with Lucius? Many people may consider him a stereotypical southern redneck due to his writing style. While there is some truth to that, but he is actually many people. I grew up in Southern California, but my relatives and parents are from the southeast. I spent most summers in Virginia and we moved to North Carolina right before I started 11th grade.
Some of the wisest, smartest, and funniest people I have ever known are from this part of the country. Some I’m even related to. So Lucius is a combination of all the best qualities of these people I have admired for one reason or another. He loves to have a good time, and he does not understand some of the craziness that happens day after day. I hope you find him funny, and at moments, a little smart.
